  • Heart Rate Sensor Applications
    The non-invasive optical heart rate sensor consists of an electronic circuit that monitors the heartbeat by clamping it to the fingertip. It does this by shining light on (or through) a finger and measuring how much light is reflected (or absorbed). When blood is pumped through the fingers, the situation fluctuates. The operation is usually performed using an ingenious combination of an infrared transmitter and an optical receiver. In addition to the optical sensor assembly, an amplifier circuit is also needed to "enhance and shape" the weak signal from the optical sensor. The following figure shows the entire circuit diagram of a typical optical heart rate monitor. Surprisingly, its output is strong enough to make the green light flash every time the heart beats.
